Resilience of the Commercial Fishing Industry to Compounding Climatic and Social Pressures

The University of Rhode Island in partnership with the RIDEM Division of Marine Fisheries is conducting a research study to collect socio-economic data on fisheries-related businesses and commercial fishermen in the State of Rhode Island. Researchers will use this data to estimate the economic impact of the fishing industry on the Rhode Island economy and to evaluate the vulnerability of the commercial fishing industry in the Port of Galilee, RI.

What are you being asked to do? We are requesting you participate in an online survey. This survey is meant for adults, 18 years of age and older, and the responses are confidential. Responses will only be shared in aggregated, non-confidential form.

How long will it take? The survey is expected to take no more than 20 minutes to complete, all questions are optional except the initial consent question, and you may exit the survey at any time.

Is the survey anonymous? No, the survey is not anonymous. To perform this study, the researchers need to collect personally identifiable information to ensure proper characterization of fishing businesses and fishing sectors. All data will be strictly confidential and only shared in aggregated, non-confidential form.

How will the survey responses be used? The responses may be used by the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to estimate the economic impact of the fishing industry on the Rhode Island economy and to evaluate the vulnerability of the commercial fishing industry in the Port of Galilee, RI. Aggregated, non-confidential data may be shared with the project steering committee and may be used in student dissertation research, peer-reviewed publications, and to inform policy making.

Risks: There are no known risks to this survey except for the time needed and convenience. There are no direct individual benefits however the aim is that this research will benefit the Fishing industry in the State of Rhode Island.
