Update on results obtained on 10/9/16 with regard to the Narragansett Bay emergency shellfish closure.

Narragansett Bay samples

Plankton tows from the Bay show that the Pseudo-nitzschia (toxic algae) bloom has not substantially changed from previous levels.

The harvest restriction will remain until the cell counts decrease.

Mussel samples collected from Ft. Wetherill tested inconclusive for toxins using a screening test; the other 8 shellfish samples were negative for toxins, meaning no toxins were detected from those samples. If there is enough sample remaining, the inconclusive Ft. Wetherill samples will be sent to the Bigelow Lab for additional analysis of Domoic Acid levels.

South Coastal Salt Ponds

The first round of plankton water samples from 4 of the states coastal salt ponds show that Pseudo-nitzschia cells were absent or present at very low levels -Winnipaug Pond, Pt. Judith Pond, Quonochontaug Pond, and Ninigret Pond were the ponds tested.

Toxicity screening tests of oysters from Pt. Judith Pond, Potters Pond, and Winnapaug Pond were also negative (no toxin detected).
