Plankton sample collection focused on waters open to harvesting: 5 samples from offshore waters Point Judith to Sakonnet Point and waters flowing into Ninigret, Winnapaug, Quonochontaug and Pt Judith Pond.

Plankton samples were collected by DEM throughout Narragansett Bay (8), in Greenwich Bay (1), in Mt. Hope Bay (1) and the Sakonnet River (1) and by New Shoreham officials in waters surrounding Block Island (4).



RIDOH performed cell counts on 21 of the 24 samples collected: 10/11 (off shore and flow into 4 salt pond) and 10/12 near Block Island and the throughout the Bay.  The remaining 3 low priority samples will be counted Thursday.



Cell Count Results

*        Flow into Salt Ponds - Pseudo-nitzschia cells were absent or present at very low levels

*        Block Island waters - Pseudo-nitzschia cells were absent or present at very low levels

*        Offshore waters ranged from 16,450 - 73,725 cells/l

*        Narragansett Bay - trace to 265,000 cells/l

*        Greenwich Bay - trace (66 cells/l)

*        Mt. Hope Bay - 1200 cells/l



Toxicity screening on highest offshore sample (73,725 cells/l) was negative.
