RIDEM To Host Meeting To Present Revised Harmful Algae Bloom Monitoring Plan For Rhode Island Waters

PROVIDENCE - The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH), will hold an informational meeting on September 12 to present the newly revised Rhode Island Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) and Shellfish Biotoxin Monitoring and Contingency Plan. The presentation will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the Hazard Room at University of Rhode Island's Coastal Institute Building, 215 South Ferry Road, Narragansett. At the public meeting, RIDEM representatives from the Office of Water Resources and Division of Marine Fisheries will describe the general structure of the plan, as well as, details on routine phytoplankton monitoring and in the event that harmful algae are detected at levels of concern, more intensified phytoplankton and shellfish monitoring.  Also described will be details of the HAB contingency plan including management responses to prevent consumption of affected shellfish.  Representatives from RI Department of Health Laboratories will describe the lab's analytical capabilities to test phytoplankton and shellfish for harmful algae and biotoxins. RIDOH's Center for Food Protection will also be on hand to answer questions.
