Modification to possession limits and/or seasons for marine species regulated under quota

Revised Recreational Fishing Season for Black Sea Bass

The RI DEM Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) announces liberalizations to the Rhode Island 2018 recreational season and possession limits for black sea bass. DMF successfully appealed a prior decision of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) to secure additional access to this abundant resource. The revised season and possession limits are as follows:

  *   June 24 through August 31:  3 fish
  *   September 1 through December 31:  7 fish
  * The minimum size remains unchanged at 15 inches

These rules for black sea bass are different than those published in our saltwater fishing magazine and our abstracts as the change was made after going to print, but the above will be the rules in effect in 2018, which is a liberalization from the rules previously published.

Possession limits are subject to modification throughout the year; it is the responsibility of the licensed fisherman to comply with possession limits and all such modifications. Current commercial and recreational possession limits can be found by calling (401) 423-1920, or visiting the Marine Fisheries webpage at http://www.dem.ri.gov/programs/fish-wildlife/marine-fisheries/mfsizes.php.
