Notice of Ongoing Research - Horseshoe Crab Recapture Study

In an effort to better understand the status of Horseshoe crab populations in Rhode Island waters, the Rhode Island Division of Marine Fisheries is conducting a mark recapture study. Tag return information will enable fisheries biologists to fine tune the management strategy with enhanced knowledge of movement, population size, exploitation rates, growth rates, natural and fishing mortality. This research is dependent on volunteer reports of tagged crabs. As a result, it is important that any crabs found with a Federal Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) be reported and released in order to maximize the number of tags in the water.
