Arborist / Equipment Operator

Highway Department

        *   The Town of South Kingstown's Highway Department has an immediate need for an Arborist / Equipment Operator. The position requires a person with experience and knowledge of performing skilled and technical tree maintenance including pruning, removal, and canopy raising in the public right-of-way and on municipal owned and maintained properties or ability to learn sufficient proficiency. The position also requires experience or ability to learn sufficient proficiency in the operation of an arborist's bucket truck, wood chipper, stump grinder, dump truck, street sweeper, roadside flail mower, other light and heavy equipment, and specialized equipment and tools.
        *   The position requires skillful, safe, and efficient operation of equipment while performing a significant variety of tasks. The employee in this position is required to work at high elevations; perform stump grinding, tree inspections, tree cutting, trimming, and shaping for tree health, maintenance, and public safety purposes; recognize risk trees, and evaluate and determine the safest methods for removal of diseased, hanging, or downed branches and trees; fertilize, treat, climb, spray, and water trees; and must be familiar with proper tree removal rigging. This position requires the employee to service equipment, make minor field repairs and adjustments, and perform assorted tasks requiring manual labor for extended periods outdoors, under unfavorable weather conditions when necessary. Please note this position is considered essential and includes emergency and/or storm operations responsibilities, including 24/7 on call status for hazardous tree events and sanding/salting/snow plowing events as well as other weather-related emergencies, and requires the ability to drive and operate equipment during winter storm events and unfavorable conditions, often for lengthy durations.
        *   This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid RI Arborist License or ability to obtain same within twelve (12) months of hire, and a RI Driver's License with a CDL Class B is required within six (6) months of hire . This position also requires a valid RI Department of Labor Hoisting Engineer's License to operate heavy equipment, within six (6) months of hire. Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and a thorough background check is required.
        *   This 40 hour per week position affiliated with Council 94 starts at $22.93 per hour, and upon successful completion of the six-month probationary period if all licensure is obtained, or up to 12- months if licensure is still pending, increases to $23.50 per hour and includes a full range of benefits.
