I can’t imagine the Marble House curators want A Charlie Brown Christmas-like tree on the property — to cerebrate holiday opulence at a Gilded Age mansion and in the square that leads to decadence. The nonprofit’s executive director, director of finance, and

community forestry projects led by Connecticut governmental entities and non-profit organizations. Urban forests are a critical form of infrastructure in our cities and towns. They help filter the air and water, maintain biodiversity, build social cohesion
within our communities, and so much more. The importance of forests and trees in our cities is increasingly being recognized as many cities face exacerbated climate change impacts. For example, high levels of impervious surface in urban areas make cities especially
vulnerable to flooding after extreme weather events. Increased impervious surface also causes cities to have elevated temperatures, also known as the urban heat island effect. The Urban and Community Forestry Planning Program supports a variety of urban forestry
planning projects with grants up to $65,000. Funding is provided by the U.S. Forest Service.

City of Forest initiative. Hosted by the Stewards of Ewen Park, in partnership with local organizations and volunteers, the event was one of over 80 eco-focused activities across the city aimed at enhancing and restoring urban green spaces. At one station,
Michael Edmond from Bronx Green-Up, the New York Botanical Garden’s community outreach program, offered seeds and homemade flower pots to attendees, encouraging them to cultivate their own mini gardens. At another, Plant Native NW Bronx – a grassroots community
organization that works on use of land and ecological restoration -- led a hands-on seed bomb making activity, teaching the community a technique popular among guerrilla gardeners in the 1970s. According to Ann Lane, founding member of Plant Native NW Bronx,
this process combines compost, clay and seeds to create “bombs” which can be thrown into underused or neglected areas to increase native plant cover…

In an effort to preserve the nation’s forest resources, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced over $265 million in funding
for 21 forest conservation projects across 17 states. According to a recent release, this initiative—part of President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act—will conserve roughly 335,000 acres of critical forestlands. In 2024, the
Forest Service directed nearly $420 million towards protecting more than 500,000 acres, committing to the preservation of forests, which support rural economies, wildlife habitats and recreation. The funding is facilitated through the USDA's Forest Legacy
Program, a voluntary initiative that assists states, tribes and private landowners in preserving valuable forestlands. Since 1990, the program has protected about 3.1 million acres nationwide and aims to benefit disadvantaged communities by protecting natural
resources for clean air, water and resilient ecosystems…

How is it that big urban trees play an absolutely vital role in protecting cities against climate change? And what can cities do to better
protect these climate warriors? This is the message that Dr. William R. Moomaw will present at Watertown’s Free Public Library at Trees for Watertown’s annual meeting on Saturday, November 9 from noon to 2 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The
news is full of stories about the brutal impact of climate change around the world. Shade trees play a key role in helping cities temper dangerously high temperatures and heavy flooding, so one way cities are preparing themselves is by planting trees. Planting
trees now is hugely important for managing climate change in the future. But young trees take decades to reach mature size. Meanwhile big urban trees are making major contributions NOW to managing climate change — by cooling the air and shading nearby heat-
absorbing surfaces, by sucking up thousands of gallons of stormwater, and by storing away atmospheric carbon in their trunks, branches, and roots…
