It has recently come to my attention that a book included in last November’s YART non-fic list contains problematic content. Encyclopedia of American Indian History & Culture has been removed from the list on the YART LibGuide at https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__olis-2Dri.libguides.com_yart_collection&d=DwIGaQ&c=tSLbvWYfvulPN3G_n48TUw&r=L_-4KCeL1NFTCgbBWGLXptRx_tYoPpZbpMOWv0nrAy0&m=ywRsf3puU5bSC3-nGKCbmj5Zw3jWX0q6E5WxmqgDkDo&s=ydFht0jxjqRyKFMWGnhHLTjzc-ytyZDG-zf4MTtOVDc&e= . See the email below for additional details.

Good morning!

Over at American Indians in Children's Literature, we've done a two-post review of the National Geographic Kids "Encyclopedia of American Indian History." I did one:
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com_2020_01_not-2Drecommended-2Dnational-2Dgeographics.html&d=DwIGaQ&c=tSLbvWYfvulPN3G_n48TUw&r=L_-4KCeL1NFTCgbBWGLXptRx_tYoPpZbpMOWv0nrAy0&m=ywRsf3puU5bSC3-nGKCbmj5Zw3jWX0q6E5WxmqgDkDo&s=aZCG0OU6PONlfKfWjpkYs1nPBIwjOPvHi2wsS2FkAhY&e=  [americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com_2020_01_not-2Drecommended-2Dnational-2Dgeographics.html&d=DwMFaQ&c=tSLbvWYfvulPN3G_n48TUw&r=qcM6taeeuo-2ltnPCQx3vJKoL9QEVEJGCNTe7X8b9X4&m=nyKasBunpDtDl0PRHummB0ac2njT59nWPnIuqzrq_lk&s=_Yv9YbyX5_JAD7WXreWV-tJLPfw8ENjkhsPqxR_KyTw&e=>

And, Jean Mendoza did one, too:
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com_2020_01_national-2Dgeographics-2Dencyclopedia-2Dof.html&d=DwIGaQ&c=tSLbvWYfvulPN3G_n48TUw&r=L_-4KCeL1NFTCgbBWGLXptRx_tYoPpZbpMOWv0nrAy0&m=ywRsf3puU5bSC3-nGKCbmj5Zw3jWX0q6E5WxmqgDkDo&s=pM2gi8OGOKhmV3b2_7jy4O1FiJ82_CBtFWCm4EP2Nn8&e=  [americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com_2020_01_national-2Dgeographics-2Dencyclopedia-2Dof.html&d=DwMFaQ&c=tSLbvWYfvulPN3G_n48TUw&r=qcM6taeeuo-2ltnPCQx3vJKoL9QEVEJGCNTe7X8b9X4&m=nyKasBunpDtDl0PRHummB0ac2njT59nWPnIuqzrq_lk&s=Q9YaCYxHwuIRgXbVCaTRa6H6PadS66Ai0WOfR5weH80&e=>

It has an impressive list of consultants but I'm pretty sure the consultants didn't see every page, image, etc., because I'm pretty sure they wouldn't say ok to some of what I saw as I read through the book. Most of you would say NO to some of it, too! I'm psyched that the overall knowledge of Native sovereignty, people, history... seems to be increasing. Maybe that's too optimistic.

If your tribal nation is in the book and you want to comment on how it is depicted, let me know.

Debbie
