Provincetown Stormwater Program Revitalizes Downtown and Improves Beach Water Quality using Porous Asphalt
Dense development and large amounts of impervious areas in Provincetown Harbor historically resulted in significant stormwater runoff reaching the harbor waters, adversely impacting shell fishing and water quality. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (Mass DEP) placed Provincetown Harbor on its 1992 Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 303(d) list of impaired waters for pathogens caused by polluted stormwater runoff. This webinar will showcase an innovative green infrastructure project to address these problems by installing new porous pavement on Commercial Street and implementing other best practices. As a result of this effort, Provincetown Harbor has already exhibited cleaner water, confirmed by significantly fewer beach closings, and Mass DEP expects Provincetown Harbor to meet all its designated uses by 2020.
The webinar will highlight the project’s approach, how and why porous asphalt was chosen for use, and measurable results and lessons learned for effective stormwater management resulting in improved water quality and supporting tourism and ecosystem health for shellfishing.
