Newsletter from Save The Lakes - March 2020

Save The Lakes (STL) has canceled the planned Annual Meeting for April 22, 2020 at the Johnston Senior Center,1291 Hartford Avenue, Johnston due to Covid 19 restrictions. This meeting will be rescheduled for a later date when DEM would be available to join STL and share their knowledge regarding freshwater.

News Flash -

After many years of discussion DEM amended freshwater fishing rules to better battle invasive plants that are choking RI waterways. The new regulations now REQUIRE boaters to remove all “Hitchhiking aquatic plants” from boats, motors, trailers, and equipment to help prevent the spread of harmful invasive plants in freshwater lakes and rivers. This is terrific news! Prohibiting the transport of plant or plant parts will greatly reduce the spread of invasive weeds as a small piece of plant fragment will establish a new plant. AND with this regulation there is a $100 fine for each violation!!!!! This will validate the Boat Inspection Program. Please get involved as DEM and STL work together to prevent the spread of invasive weeds

Upcoming Ideas -

Save The Lakes is promoting the LakeSmart program. This is a waterfront resident initiative program where people work together, sharing solutions to waterfront problems. More details soon.

There are numerous Earth Day Cleanups scheduled for the end of April. Join in where you can. Cleanups are a great way to protect and improve our freshwater bodies. But please check for current information as many events have had to be canceled or rescheduled due to Covid 19. Remember - cleaning up in your own backyard or neighborhood is a great start!

Are you willing to work on a team for the Great Boaters Program? Respond by email to info at stlri.org<mailto:info at stlri.org> to learn how you can get involved.

The Save The Lakes meeting will be of interest to all. As soon as the COVID-19 (coronavirus) is behind us there will be a flyer distributed. In the meantime, please follow the CDC guidelines, stay healthy and be safe.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Kindly,

Judy Colaluca
