Coastal communities face unique challenges managing water quality and ecosystem health. Traditional development brings increased water pollution and flooding, which adversely impacts economic and community health. Over the past several years, communities in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, have leveraged green infrastructure strategies to reduce nutrient flows in their stormwater, prevent bacterial pollution in their harbors and bays, and build resilience in their communities to coastal flooding and sea level rise.

This webinar will showcase best practices in the coastal Cape Cod communities of Sandwich and Yarmouth, MA, who have addressed local water quality issues through a series of innovative green infrastructure projects. This past year, the Town of Yarmouth, MA completed design and construction of their fourth subsurface gravel wetland to treat bacteria and nutrient pollution. The Town of Sandwich, MA used a combination of bioretention facilities, vegetated swales, and porous pavement installations to clean Sandwich Harbor in pursuit of approval for shellfishing. These efforts are creating cleaner and healthier harbors, industries, and communities. The webinar will highlight each town's planning and implementation process, funding and engagement strategies, and lessons learned for effective stormwater management through green infrastructure.

Presenters:

  * Sam Jensen, Town of Sandwich, MA
  * Richard Claytor, Horsley Witten Group
  *   Nick Cristofori, CEI Engineers
