January, 2020

Dear Blackstone Valley Advocate:

On April 22, we will observe the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. On Earth Day 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for a sustainable environment, channeling the energy of the anti-war protests to activists that heightened the public's concern about saving the planet and gave voice to environmental consciousness. By the end of 1970, we saw the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, and passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts. Earth Day is now recognized yearly by a billion people as a day to change human behavior.

The Blackstone Valley heard the environmental message of 1970, prompting Rhode Island community leaders along the Blackstone River to organize and conduct Project ZAP in September 1972. This one-day happening drew 10,000 concerned citizens to clean the banks of the river from Providence north to Massachusetts. These 10,000 "Zapsters" helped rejuvenate the oldest polluted river in the nation. Since that time, hundreds of river clean-ups have taken place with thousands of people participating. A state and national park now line our river banks, a bike path is constructed, catch and release fishing takes place and river tours by boat and kayak are regular occurrences.

The work that has been done by our federal, state and city governments and our volunteer groups has changed the way we enjoy and live in the Blackstone River Valley. It's time to begin considering how we will mark Project ZAP's 50th anniversary. My hope is to ensure that in 2022, the 50 years of work along the Blackstone River is highlighted in an appropriate way. To do that, we need the thoughts of many to mark this milestone properly. Celebrating our past accomplishments is important, but the impact will be minimized if we don’t use the occasion to begin a discussion of what more must be done. The purpose of our meeting is to bring interested parties together to begin a discussion about where we have been and where we need to go. Should we decide to proceed in some form, the success of any future actions will depend on the same level of public input, collaboration and community involvement that made our earlier effort such a success.

We will meet at the Blackstone Valley Visitor Center, 175 Main Street, Pawtucket, on Monday, February 24 at noon to begin a discussion. Lunch will be provided. Parking is in the rear of the building. Please respond to Mike Martin at mike at tourblackstone.com<mailto:mike at tourblackstone.com> or 401 724 2200 with your intentions. Kindly spread the word to others you may think should be with us.

With much appreciation;

Robert D. Billington, President
