Building a greener future requires a specialized workforce that can design, build, and maintain green infrastructure. Training programs such as the National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) offer opportunities to develop the skills and experience needed to meet the growing demand for installation and maintenance of green infrastructure projects. In Boston, innovative training programs are teaching proper green infrastructure installation and maintenance techniques to promote a healthier city with equitable access to green space and its associated benefits. The growing demand for street trees, rain gardens, parks, greenways, and other nature-based solutions in community environmental and public health projects requires a larger green workforce in both the public and private sectors.

This webinar will cover several green infrastructure training programs in the City of Boston, Massachusetts. Speakers will discuss strategies to connect businesses with graduates of green infrastructure training programs as demand for these skills increases in the Boston area. Case studies will demonstrate how investment in green jobs training can lead to more sustainable green infrastructure programs that improve the health of local communities and secure jobs for local residents.

Presenters:

  * Michael Chavez, YouthBuild Boston and Built Environment Plus
  * David Queeley, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Coalition
  * Trevor Smith, Land Escapes, Inc. and Ecological Landscape Alliance

SNEP Webinar: Blooming but not Beautiful: Addressing Harmful Algal Blooms in Southeast New England (9/14/2021 1:00 – 2:30pm EDT)
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are becoming an increasing cause for concern throughout the SNEP region; and while not a direct result of climate change, blooms can be exacerbated by warming water temperature. HABs are usually triggered by high levels of nutrients (primarily phosphorus and/or nitrogen) in lakes, ponds, and estuaries. Common nutrient sources include lawn fertilizers and septic systems, and because nutrients may come from a variety of sources, a combination of actions is typically needed to abate blooms. In situations where nutrients are released into lakes and estuaries via ground water or surface water flow, intercepting sources of nutrient pollution often requires a collaborative effort between multiple municipalities that share the watershed. This webinar will address some of the primary causes and concerns related to nutrient pollution and harmful algal blooms throughout the SNEP region, how EPA is working to address the problem and the next steps required to better ensure safe and healthy waters for all. SNEP Webinar: Funding Basics for New England Communities: A Beginner’s Guide to Developing Successful Proposals for Resiliency (9/22/2021 1:30 – 2:30pm EDT)
This webinar will cover how to craft more competitive grant applications, including how to identify priority projects, determine suitable funding sources, and avoid common pitfalls. Participants will also have the opportunity to apply what they have learned to a unique funding opportunity: the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s (NFWF) National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF). NCRF invests in projects that will create, expand, and restore natural systems in areas that will (1) increase protection for communities from coastal storms, sea- and lake-level changes, inundation, and coastal erosion and (2) improve valuable habitats for fish and wildlife species. NCRF’s team of Field Liaisons, Throwe Environmental, will be available to cover how communities can take advantage of the NCRF, as well as other funding sources. Enhanced Aquifer Recharge of Stormwater in the United States: State of the Science Review

EPA is announcing the availability of this final report prepared by the Safe and Sustainable Water Resources (SSWR) Research Program, located within the Office of Research and Development, with support from Eastern Research Group (ERG). This report is a summary and synthesis of scientific and technical literature on enhanced aquifer recharge (EAR) using stormwater. It is based on a search and screening of published literature conducted during summer and fall of 2020. The goal is to summarize the current state-of-the-science of information leading to best practices for EAR using stormwater. Topics addressed include factors affecting recharge volumes, risks (particularly of water quality degradation), what current science suggests about best practices, and knowledge gaps that, if filled, will help inform recommendations for safe, effective EAR using stormwater.
