WEST NILE VIRUS DETECTED IN MOSQUITO SAMPLE FOUND IN BRISTOL
PROVIDENCE, RI - The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) have confirmed the second detection of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the state. The virus was found in a mosquito sample collected by DEM in Bristol on July 28 and tested by the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories<https://health.ri.gov/programs/detail.php?pgm_id=1092 >. The other mosquito samples collected statewide showed no signs of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus, Jamestown Canyon Virus<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.cdc.gov/jamestown-canyon/__;!!KKphUJtCzQ!KDe3HZ3v5_e92-U4KZTt7dSuehkKY4zMc7eoHT1yZvuEqy6_TLvquEXuUmpzblQh3A9zKJoazeMnLwk1uRgxu0X0qLWinh2DKcMu$ [cdc[.]gov]> (JCV), or additional WNV. Check RIDOH's arboviral surveillance data webpage<https://health.ri.gov/data/arboviralsurveillance/ > for updated weekly test results.

The first detection of WNV this season was collected on July 21 in East Providence. WNV is the main mosquito-borne disease in the US. While most people with WNV don't get sick, about one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. There are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people. For more information about WNV, visit http://www.health.ri.gov/wnv <http://www.health.ri.gov/wnv >.
