Internship opportunities are available to undergraduates and graduate students, as well as individuals who have recently completed an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Interns will be financially compensated at $20 per hour for undergraduate students and $22 per hour for graduate students and individuals that have completed undergraduate or graduate degrees. Interns can work up to 29 hours per week and will be hired as part-time employees through NBEP’s host institution, Roger Williams University. All summer interns will be a part of a cohort and will have the opportunity to learn from each other, NBEP staff, and NBEP partners. NBEP will support interns to present their project findings in a webinar, meeting, or conference.
All applications will be due by 11:59 pm on Friday, March 27th, 2026. Start and end dates are flexible depending on intern availability, and we anticipate that internships will last for 8-10 weeks. In this workshop, we will present a brief overview of WQdashboard and share how our partners are using this tool to share data. The session will also feature a demo to walk new users through the process of creating their own website with WQdashboard.
Partner Internship Update: Town of Barrington, RI
During the fall semester, NBEP supported the work of Nichole Nuthall, who was hired as an intern to work with the Town of Barrington, RI on projects related to municipal climate resiliency. Nichole prepared the Town's 1st Annual Report on Ready & Resilient Barrington - i.e., the Town's adopted climate action plan. The report she prepared was presented to the Town Council and the Town Council accepted the report. Nichole also assisted with grant writing, coordinated with state and local partners, and helped to develop communications materials to help residents be better prepared for flooding, stormwater, and other environmental hazards. Why doesn't Rhode Island Dump Snow into Narragansett Bay?
The Providence Journal recently shared an article, “Why doesn't RI dump snow into Narragansett Bay?” [https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://nbep.us10.list-manage.com__;!!KKphUJtCzQ!IfiN34Biyxjxjzs48v_rBBD72rRR4wXUKgGj0KnXde4sIMKn11QunsTQz7cSLeRGoiaCE1T8gIVsN58J6h5AMl68MtE05y8Kn0dJ$ [nbep[.]us10[.]list-manage[.]com]]<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nbep.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a10a20f502178989f7c53e0ef&id=8e7f897b7e&e=d0c768fc40__;!!KKphUJtCzQ!ID16VlgDC-PLYpWIdtPOgUm64U5htE_pD9zxT6NM5Se4AJB-Muv9fcN1edf8pBVO6H2Xot7ZYI68xPKTWaU$>. During February 2026, the Narragansett Bay region experienced a historic snowfall event, dubbed the ‘Blizzard of 2026’. This snowstorm outcompeted the historic Blizzard of ’78 in some parts of the watershed, with T.F. Green Airport reporting over 37 inches of snowfall [https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://nbep.us10.list-manage.com__;!!KKphUJtCzQ!IfiN34Biyxjxjzs48v_rBBD72rRR4wXUKgGj0KnXde4sIMKn11QunsTQz7cSLeRGoiaCE1T8gIVsN58J6h5AMl68MtE05y8Kn0dJ$ [nbep[.]us10[.]list-manage[.]com]]<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nbep.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a10a20f502178989f7c53e0ef&id=c46841f846&e=d0c768fc40__;!!KKphUJtCzQ!ID16VlgDC-PLYpWIdtPOgUm64U5htE_pD9zxT6NM5Se4AJB-Muv9fcN1edf8pBVO6H2Xot7ZYI68ZhaZ_Nw$> over approximately 24 hours. With such a large amount of snowfall in a short time, cities and towns had to face the challenge of clearing roadways and finding a suitable location to store snow. This article explains why we aren’t able to dump the snow into Narragansett Bay, largely due to the risk of contaminating the water with salt, litter, and other pollutants. In 2024, NBEP shared a science update relating to precipitation and snowfall in the Narragansett Bay region. As the likelihood for high-intensity precipitation events such as the February 2026 blizzard increases, it will be important to plan for safe management of snow and rainwater.

Coming Soon! RFR for Tidal Restoration Preliminary Field Investigations in Narragansett Bay Estuary Region
The Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) is seeking applications for potential tidal restoration sites within the Massachusetts portion of the Narragansett Bay Estuary region that need preliminary field investigations to support tidal restoration project planning and development. These studies, contracted and managed by DER, provide the agency with critical information for future ecological restoration planning. Likewise, the studies help landowners and partners assess opportunities and constraints during early planning phases of potential tidal restoration projects. DER is interested in tidal restoration projects that are at an early stage of development and/or decision-making. Selected projects will be eligible to receive technical assistance from DER staff and DER-led contracted technical services from qualified vendors.
