new Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Program Framework in Rhode Island. A primary focus of the initiative is the establishment of priorities for the development of the water quality restoration plans known as TMDLs. The workshop will be held from 4-6 p.m.
in Room 300 at DEM Headquarters, 235 Promenade Street in Providence. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-autospace:none"><span style="color:black"> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in"><span style="color:black">In Rhode Island, DEM’s Office of Water Resources is responsible for administering the federally mandated program for the development of water quality restoration plans referred to as Total
Maximum Daily Load (TMDLs). The goal of DEM’s program is to develop and implement water quality restoration plans aimed at restoring impaired waterbodies to an acceptable condition that meets water quality standards and supports the waterbodies’ designated
uses (such as swimming, fishing, and shellfishing). DEM’s approach reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the protection and restoration of drinking water supply sources, shellfish growing waters, and beaches, and to restore waters degraded due
to excess nutrients. The approach is outlined in a draft document entitled “Implementing EPA’s TMDL Vision Framework in Rhode Island”. The document is available on-line at:
