<i>Northampton Designs with Nature</i>. Northampton, Massachusetts is home to 28,549 residents with a total land area of approximately 22,849 acres. During the past five years, Northampton has seen significant areas of development including the redevelopment
of the former Northampton State Hospital into Village Hill and expansion of residential projects and redevelopment of sites on the City’s highway oriented commercial strip. Northampton’s location on the Connecticut River and presence of I-91 and other major
roadways was a strong determinant on the growth of the city. Green infrastructure is a critical part of a broader comprehensive system to mitigate flooding.
