<span style="color:windowtext">for the many benefits they bring to urban neighborhoods. Trees can filter stormwater and reduce flood risk; provide shade and mitigate the urban heat island effect; and contribute to the overall environmental and public health
of urban communities. The Massachusetts “Greening the Gateway Cities” Program aims to reduce household heating and cooling energy use by increasing tree canopy cover in urban residential areas known as “Gateway Cities.”
</span>Plantings are concentrated in environmental justice neighborhoods with minimal green space to benefit those most in need. A recent pilot project in Chelsea, MA focused on urban heat island mitigation, flood risk reduction, and the public health impacts
of increasing the tree canopy.<span style="color:windowtext"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="Default"><span style="color:windowtext">This webinar will showcase how tree planting contributes to better stormwater management, builds climate resiliency, and improves overall environmental and public health in communities overburdened by social
and environmental injustice. Speakers from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will detail efforts to improve green space access through the “Greening the Gateway Cities” program, and speakers from GreenRoots and the City of Chelsea will take a deep dive into
how this program will accomplish its goal of 2,400 trees planted this Spring to address stormwater runoff, flood risks, and the impacts of the urban heat island effect in their community.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
