Hi all,

RIDEM is seeking volunteers for paddling and plucking invasive water chestnut at Turner Reservoir in East Providence over the next few Fridays 10-1 pm (weather permitting).

Interested parties must provide their own boats, life vests, and sign a waiver – register here for more details:
https://forms.gle/MaTFC67P4jVVWQL2A [forms.gle]

The invasive plant population there is sparse, and intermingles with other native plants along the shore, so it’s a slow serene paddle to hunt for the water chestnut plants. It’s a bigger pond with over two miles of shoreline, so the more
eyes the better. It’s expected the larger effort this summer will dramatically reduce future efforts in the next few years, but because there are so many ponds upstream in the watershed plagued with water chestnuts, hand pulling efforts will need to be an
annual occurrence in order to keep the water chestnut at bay in Turner. However, compared to Central Pond just to the north (which has over 60 acres of water chestnut), it is promising that this community effort could prevent Turner Reservoir from becoming
overrun with water chestnut. It is important habitat to protect for the blueback herring that traverse the 3 fish ladders in the Ten Mile River to spawn in Turner Reservoir.
