This is a repeat posting, but below is additional information on
training sessions along with some pictures to help ID jellyfish in the
attached.

REPORT JELLYFISH SIGHTINGS ON YOUR SMARTPHONE

Do you ever run into Lion's mane jellyfish, comb jellies or sea nettles
when you're fishing or swimming in Narragansett Bay? Some of these
charismatic carnivores and other gelatinous plankton can sting, consume
10 times their weight each day in larvae of commercially important fish
and shellfish species and other zooplankton prey, and cause nuisance
blooms or "smacks" of jellies that interfere with human uses of coastal
waters in late summer and early fall. However the jellies may also be
useful indicators of environmental changes in Rhode Island waters
related to coastal development, water quality, overfishing, aquaculture
and global warming.

A group at Brown University is field-testing a crowd-sourced,
geographically based application (collector for arcgis) for smartphones,
ipads and androids. The free app allows anglers, surfers, beachgoers and
others to report their observations of eight different species of
"jellies" that occur commonly in RI waters, along with associated
weather and water conditions. The observations are mapped almost
instantaneously in a Geographic Information System database maintained
by Brown University, and can be viewed on your telephone or ipad when
you're logged in to the collector app.

The researchers want to get broader coverage of RI waters, year-round,
in order to learn where jellies are, and are not occurring. If you are
interested in participating, visit their Facebook page, RI jellywatch Or
contact james_corbett at brown.edu. Detailed instructions are attached to
this email.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JELLYFISH MONITORING, PLEASE READ THE ATTACHED
INSTRUCTIONS and FIELD GUIDE.
