In anticipation of moving forward with quota management for smoothhound sharks (smooth dogfish), HMS has scheduled an additional Shark Identification Workshop this year (on December 10 in NY). As a reminder, an individual must attend an Atlantic Shark Identification Workshop in order to obtain a federal commercial shark dealer permit, which is required for smoothhound shark dealers. More information on shark ID workshops can be found in the attachment and in my previous email, below.

Good Morning,



In anticipation of moving forward with quota management for smoothhound sharks (smooth dogfish), HMS staff did a review of the dealer data. This review revealed two-thirds of the shark dealers buying smoothhounds do not have a federal commercial shark dealer permit. According to the ASMFC 2008 Coastal Sharks Fishery Management Plan, Section 4.3.8.3, a federal commercial shark dealer permit is required to buy and sell any shark caught in state waters. Please ensure all state dealers have the proper permits in order for the states and HMS to monitor the smoothhound quota.



To obtain a federal commercial shark dealer permit, an individual must attend an Atlantic Shark Identification Workshop. When submitting a federal permit application, Atlantic Shark Dealers must include a copy of a valid Atlantic Shark Identification Workshop certificate for each place of business listed on the shark dealer permit.
