A harmful algal bloom outbreak, the first such known in Rhode Island, shut down shellfish beds in portions of Narragansett Bay for most of the month of October.

The state is hosting a meeting at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography on December 16 to review what happened and to discuss plans for harmful algal bloom monitoring as well as identify what issues would benefit from further research.

Sea Grant intends to use feedback from the meeting to craft a request for small-scale research proposals that will address harmful algal blooms, which are the result of rapid growth of potentially toxin-producing phytoplankton, in the case of this recent outbreak, Pseudo-nitzschia.

This meeting will be of interest to researchers and members of the shellfish industry, as well as regulators.
