Whelk Fishery Information Exchange



RI DEM will be hosting a meeting with the whelk fishing community to discuss the whelk population, the fishery, management and the findings of a previous whelk workshop. The meeting will be held at 5:00 PM on September 11, 2018 at the URI Bay Campus, Coastal Institute Building Auditorium.


In the Fall of 2017, RI DEM, MA DMF and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) held a workshop to examine whelk (knobbed and channeled) in Rhode Island.  Members of the fishing community were invited, but were not able to attend. The goal was to discuss what would be needed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the whelk fishery, the scientific data required, tools for assessing the stock, and the management regulations.

The meeting planned for September is an opportunity to review the findings of the workshop with the whelk fishing industry, and to collaborate on and discuss the findings. We hope stakeholders of the whelk fishing community can attend. This is strictly an informational meeting, no management decisions will be made, however this meeting will help inform the DEM about the industry's opinions and thoughts on the findings of the workshop.
