What makes libraries wonderful? At the Barrington Public Library on Saturday, September 21, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m., four award-winning authors for children and teens will hold a panel discussion on the subject: "Launching Young Lives: Why Authors Love Libraries." Moderated by the Lincoln School's Meagan Lenihan, the event will include a book sale and signing and light refreshments. Sale proceeds will be donated to the RI Coalition of Library Advocates (COLA), a grass-roots organization supporting the state's libraries.

Featured authors Linda Crotta Brennan, Kara LaReau, Nancy Tupper Ling, and Padma Venkatraman are linked by excellence. Their prizes and starred reviews are for poetry and prose, fiction and nonfiction, picture books and books for young teens. Books available for signing range from current events to fantasy, and from light-hearted adventure to fiercely heart-warming realism-for the children on your gift list, look for recent publications such as Brennan's Climate Change and Air Quality; LaReau's middle-grade trilogy, The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters; Ling's The Yin-Yang Sisters and the Dragon Frightful; and Venkatraman's The Bridge Home. Books on the Square will handle sales, authors will sign books, and COLA membership materials will be available.

The event is cosponsored by the Barrington Public Library and the Rhode Island Coalition of Library Advocates. COLA, founded as a citizen activist group in the 1980s and now a section of the RI Library Association, encourages library users to get involved. Libraries promote intellectual freedom and inquiry for all ages and serve as incubators for creativity in childhood and maturity alike. COLA, like a statewide Friends of the Library group, advocates and promotes library services in all types of libraries.
