Hello RI Arborists,

Our local US Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry team has been putting together this nice weekly newsletter with some news, events, resources, and grant opportunities that I wanted to share with you. Included in this week’s email is a link to an upcoming webinar from the EPA on Integrated Pest Management for Arborists and Urban Foresters that looks like it could be a good one.

If you’d like to receive the newsletter weekly, you can sign up with Google Form link at the beginning of the email.

Thanks,

Robert (Lou) Allard

In the Oct. 3 edition of Newport This Week there was an advertisement for arboricide. The page 10 ad noted that Newport Mansions/The Preservation Society of Newport County “is on the hunt for majestic trees to light up Washington Square and Marble House.” The organization, with total assets of $83.3 million and 2023 revenue of $31.3 million, wants people to kill their own, I presume, healthy trees — I can’t imagine the Marble House curators want A Charlie Brown Christmas-like tree on the property — to cerebrate holiday opulence at a Gilded Age mansion and in the square that leads to decadence. The nonprofit’s executive director, director of finance, and chief of staff were paid a combined $780,421 last year. “Is there a 15- to 30-foot evergreen in your yard that’s ready for a starring role?” the ad asked. “If your tree fits the bill, our expert greenhouse team will carefully remove it for you.” For your sacrifice of a “majestic” tree, The Preservation Society of Newport County ad said, “you’ll have the bragging rights of being part of Newport’s Christmas wonder!...

A group of neighbors in Buffalo spent the day replanting the trees destroyed by a tornado in August. It was an EF-1 tornado that ripped through Downtown Buffalo, even tearing the roof off a business on Niagara Street. You can watch our coverage of the tornado below and read more here. Many of the days following the tornado were spent picking up debris. Re-Tree volunteers continued cleanup efforts Saturday, replanting trees across the city at Johnson Park and the Buffalo Central Terminal…

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is pleased to announce two new funding opportunities for urban and community forestry projects led by Connecticut governmental entities and non-profit organizations. Urban forests are a critical form of infrastructure in our cities and towns. They help filter the air and water, maintain biodiversity, build social cohesion within our communities, and so much more. The importance of forests and trees in our cities is increasingly being recognized as many cities face exacerbated climate change impacts. For example, high levels of impervious surface in urban areas make cities especially vulnerable to flooding after extreme weather events. Increased impervious surface also causes cities to have elevated temperatures, also known as the urban heat island effect. The Urban and Community Forestry Planning Program supports a variety of urban forestry planning projects with grants up to $65,000. Funding is provided by the U.S. Forest Service.

Ellsworth will soon add over 150 new trees to its urban landscape, thanks to $193,000 in grants awarded to the Ellsworth Arbor Commission to expand green spaces and increase the city’s climate resilience. “This is a huge opportunity for the City of Ellsworth,” Mary Blackstone, Arbor Commission Vice Chair and Green Ellsworth Community Liaison said. The project’s funding includes a $20,000 grant from the Maine Forest Service to develop a comprehensive forest management plan. Additionally, a $173,000 federal grant will support tree planting along High Street, stretching down to the Union River. “It's the first time, at least in recent history, that so much money has been allocated to trees in Ellsworth, so we're really excited,” Tabatha White, Arbor Commission Chair, said…

On a recent crisp, autumn afternoon, Ewen Park was growing greener by the hour as 190 new trees took root in celebration of the third annual City of Forest initiative. Hosted by the Stewards of Ewen Park, in partnership with local organizations and volunteers, the event was one of over 80 eco-focused activities across the city aimed at enhancing and restoring urban green spaces. At one station, Michael Edmond from Bronx Green-Up, the New York Botanical Garden’s community outreach program, offered seeds and homemade flower pots to attendees, encouraging them to cultivate their own mini gardens. At another, Plant Native NW Bronx – a grassroots community organization that works on use of land and ecological restoration -- led a hands-on seed bomb making activity, teaching the community a technique popular among guerrilla gardeners in the 1970s. According to Ann Lane, founding member of Plant Native NW Bronx, this process combines compost, clay and seeds to create “bombs” which can be thrown into underused or neglected areas to increase native plant cover…

John Daigle, professor of forest recreation management at the University of Maine, is receiving the 2024 Regional Impact Award from Native Plant Trust, a plant conservation organization focused solely on New England’s native plants. The award recognizes regionally significant leadership and achievement in conservation, horticulture and education. A citizen member of Penobscot Nation, Daigle created the Ash Protection Collaboration Across Wabanakik in 2023. The group works to raise awareness of the cultural and ecological significance of black ash trees and provide strategies to protect them from invasive species, specifically the emerald ash borer…

In an effort to preserve the nation’s forest resources, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced over $265 million in funding for 21 forest conservation projects across 17 states. According to a recent release, this initiative—part of President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act—will conserve roughly 335,000 acres of critical forestlands. In 2024, the Forest Service directed nearly $420 million towards protecting more than 500,000 acres, committing to the preservation of forests, which support rural economies, wildlife habitats and recreation. The funding is facilitated through the USDA's Forest Legacy Program, a voluntary initiative that assists states, tribes and private landowners in preserving valuable forestlands. Since 1990, the program has protected about 3.1 million acres nationwide and aims to benefit disadvantaged communities by protecting natural resources for clean air, water and resilient ecosystems…

LETTER: What’s So Important About Preserving Big Urban Trees?

How is it that big urban trees play an absolutely vital role in protecting cities against climate change? And what can cities do to better protect these climate warriors? This is the message that Dr. William R. Moomaw will present at Watertown’s Free Public Library at Trees for Watertown’s annual meeting on Saturday, November 9 from noon to 2 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The news is full of stories about the brutal impact of climate change around the world. Shade trees play a key role in helping cities temper dangerously high temperatures and heavy flooding, so one way cities are preparing themselves is by planting trees. Planting trees now is hugely important for managing climate change in the future. But young trees take decades to reach mature size. Meanwhile big urban trees are making major contributions NOW to managing climate change — by cooling the air and shading nearby heat- absorbing surfaces, by sucking up thousands of gallons of stormwater, and by storing away atmospheric carbon in their trunks, branches, and roots…
